A Bristol restaurant has bagged a major industry accolade at a recent nationwide award event.

Achari, the Bangladeshi and Indian restaurant and takeaway, was crowned “Best Asian Restaurant in the South West” at the Asian Curry Awards 2024, held in London on Sunday.

The Asian Curry Awards, dubbed the “Oscars of Curry,” recognise the excellence of pan-Asian culinary venues across the country, celebrating Indian, Bangladeshi, Pakistani, Sri Lankan, Chinese, Japanese, Singaporean, Thai, and many other culinary traditions.

Hosted by the BBC news anchor Samantha Simmonds, the award ceremony was held at Grosvenor House in London, where a contingent from Achari, including founder and head chef Kamrul Islam, attended the event.

On receiving the award, Kamrul said: “We’d like to extend our heartfelt thanks to our loyal customers and the wider Bristol community for their continued support.

“Winning these prestigious awards inspires us to continue offering innovative and accessible dishes, creating unforgettable dining experiences for all. We couldn’t have done this without our customers.”

Located on Cotham Hill, surrounded by several acclaimed food and drink establishments, Achari boasts an extensive menu ranging from Hyderabadi biryani and Keralan mango chicken to Goan chili king prawns, paneer butter chili, Lucknow nalli gosht, and tender Kashmiri tandoori.

Achari has been a mainstay on Cotham Hill for over three decades, albeit under its previous iteration, Indian Ocean.

“This incredible achievement reflects our dedication to serving authentic Indian, Bangladeshi, and British Indian cuisine, blending tradition with innovation,” said Kamrul Islam, founder and head chef of Achari

According to Kamrul, Achari’s long-term success stems from several features they have embraced over the years: bring your own booze, student deals, and catering to all dietary requirements, including vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, and halal options.

This award follows another recent achievement, as Achari won two awards at the Bangladeshi Catering Association (BCA) Awards in October: Best Restaurant in the South West and Best Chef Championship.
