Bristol to get its first dedicated fermented food shop

By Martin Booth  Wednesday Sep 16, 2020

A scientist with a background in microbial genetics is opening Bristol’s first dedicated fermented food shop.

Every Good Thing, due to open in early October, will sell cultures and equipment, and provide advice, demonstrations and workshops to help people make their own ferments at home.

The shop at Cargo in Wapping Wharf will also be selling products including kombucha, kimchi, chilli sauce and kefir grains.

It will operate as a production kitchen and workshop space on Mondays and Tuesdays and be open for the purchase of ferments and equipment for the rest of the week.

Shop owner Dr Caroline Gilmartin is a fermented food specialist, whose interest in fermented foods came after a friend gave her some milk kefir grains after she fell seriously ill with suspected pneumonia in 2014.

Through a series of workshops and demos, Caroline began to spread the word about how to make and manage your own kefir and ferments.

From her home in Cliftonwood, she supplies Every Good Thing kefir grains to customers across the UK and has written a book, A Practical Guide to Fermented Foods, which will be published in October.

“My family are more than ready for me to take my venture out of our kitchen, where the smell of kimchi can be overpowering at times,” Caroline said.

“I am very much looking forward to opening at Wapping Wharf, a part of the city that I love. I am delighted to be in such excellent company with some of the finest independent traders in the city.”
