Scoopaway
Scoopaway has been serving the health and penny conscious of Gloucester Road for more than 26 years. The shop was taken over in 2006 by Tim Killburn, who now owns the whole foods institution with his wife Sam.
The idea of Scoopaway is that customers can help themselves to as much or as little as they need, doing away completely with unnecessary packaging and food waste.
Although plastic and paper bags are provided, Scoopaway encourage customers to bring their own Tupperware, jars or containers to further reduce waste. They will weigh your container before you fill it and deduct that weight from the net weight of the product.
is needed now More than ever
“The ethos of the shop is to limit the use of packaging to its nth degree,” Tim explains. “People scoop what they want or what they need per day or per week, rather than buying everything as packaged products and throwing all the packing away.”
The walls of the shop are lined with pick ‘n’ mix style dispensers filled with grains, pulses, rice, pasta, quinoa, nuts, seeds, coffee, and dried fruits, among other things.
Sitting on the shelves above are tubs upon tubs of herbs and spices, from your typical cumins and corianders, to more unusual offerings like nettle or lavender. The centre of the shop is occupied by barrels filled with cereals, granola, fruits and currants, and wholemeal flours.
There are also parts dedicated to gluten-free, wheat-free and dairy-free diets.
“We sell whole foods – it’s cooking from scratch. We have everything you need to create a good nourishing meal, from your grains, your rice, your pulses, to all your herbs and spices.”
Almost 60% of the shop’s goods come from local suppliers in the Bristol area, cutting down on transport costs and helping the environment. A lot of Scoopaway’s products are also grown without using fertilisers or nitrates to encourage growth.
“People in Bristol – and particularly in this area – buy into that ethos and it fits the demographic of the city.”
