The Athenian – takeaway review

By Martin Booth  Tuesday May 16, 2017

The Athenian is well-used to being based in a converted shipping container, with one of its five London locations in Boxpark in Shoreditch, the UK’s most well-known collection of containers repurposed into shops.

Cargo in Wapping Wharf is going some way to replicating the success of Boxpark and The Athenian’s first foray outside London can now be found on the first floor of Cargo 2.

It’s all about the souvlaki here – a favourite food to eat on the go in Greece which consists of a pita wrap filled with grilled meat. There is also cheese as a vegetarian alternative and grilled mushrooms as a vegan one.

A standard souvlaki costs £5.50, with the addition of halloumi in the ‘super’ versions costing £1 more.

The wrap may be the traditional way to eat a souvlaki (whose name comes from the word, meaning ‘little skewer’, after the cooking method) but there is also the option to get the food in a box.

A family of three were sat on the picnic table outside on Sunday lunchtime to eat their boxes, with the dad so impressed by his food that he took The Athenian’s telephone number so he could phone through his order and collect his food swiftly while passing through Wapping Wharf on his way back home every Wednesday.

Another box eaten inside was the double meat (£7.50), featuring chunky and juicy strips of chicken and pork, tasty pita bread, oregano fries, salad and a couple of dips drizzled over the food – a garlicky tzatziki and The Athenian’s own signature sauce made with Greek honey, mustard and a selection of secret herbs. It was very good indeed.

The box is like a deconstructed way to eat a souvlaki and comes with an added bonus of being much less messy. There are even small wooden forks here to help you on your way.

Also available at The Athenian, which will soon have a neighbour in the shape of Cargo Cantina, are Greek salads, olives, herbal teas, beer and chocolate.

You no longer have to travel all the way to Greece to enjoy authentic Hellenic street food.
