85 things to do in January 2018

Don’t let the weather dampen your spirits this month – there’s plenty to get out there and do. This month’s major highlight is the annual Slapstick Festival, guaranteed to put smiles on faces with their programme of talks, film screenings and comedy. This year’s grand opening is hosted by king of one-liners, Tim Vine.

Elsewhere, you’ll find the city’s theatres rolling out their first shows of the year, with our picks including an adaptation of The Diary of Anne Frank at The Alma Tavern, and Weston on a Sunday – a bittersweet look at the challenges of dementia.

Keeping it local, Bristolian author Emily Koch will be celebrating the launch of her debut novel, while poet Vanessa Kisuule also showcases her new collection, published by locals Raise The Bar.

Finally, if you’re not on a strict diet of bread and water after the Christmas indulgence, make sure you celebrate Burns Night in style with whiskeys and a delicious dinner at The Milk Thistle. If you are abstaining this month, make your way over to St Werburgh’s for the annual wassail, blessing the apple trees for a good crop in the Autumn (your hangover might have worn off by then).
