Bristol’s first inclusive rugby team starring in documentary
Bristol’s first LGBTQ+ rugby club will star in a behind-the-scenes documentary following the course of a season.
Pride on the Pitch captures the lives of teammates from Bristol Bisons RFC, dubbed the South West’s “first inclusive and queer friendly rugby team”, on their quest to climb their league ladder.
The hour-long programme is narrated by comedian, actor and presenter Jayde Adams.

“Our message is clear – rugby is a sport for everyone who wants to play it and we’re delighted to showcase our unique journey over the last season,” said Bristol Bisons chairperson Jamie White.
“We hope our story will not only highlight the importance of inclusive rugby to those who might not know it exists, but also inspire anyone who might be feeling like they don’t fit in or are looking for their own safe space to join, to find an International Gay Rugby (IGR) club near them”.
“The Bisons are one of over hundred inclusive global rugby clubs that are part of the IGR community, welcoming players, supporters, and coaches of all backgrounds, sexualities, and abilities, offering a safe space to socialise, make friends and have fun, all whilst playing the beautiful game of rugby.

Sasha Acheson, Bristol Bisons director of rugby, added: “Growth is something that happens through collective dedication to a purpose, and consistently seeing areas in need of attention and making them your strengths.
“This is exactly what the Bisons have seen and done over the last two seasons. How incredible that this last season has been caught on camera for all to see.
“This group of players are far more than just a rugby team: their mindset, tenacity, honesty, and resilience has led them to go from second from the bottom of their league to winning it, and I couldn’t be prouder of them.
“And the most exciting thing? That there’s still so much more to come! Bring on the Bingham Cup, the IGR’s World Cup in Rome in May 2024. I’ve every faith this team can bring the cup back to Bristol and solidify their standing as one of the best teams in the IGR”.
Bristol Bisons was formed in 2005 and has grown from a handful of players to a team of more than 80.
The club was named champions of the IGR National Development League during the 22/23 season.
Bristol Bisons: Pride on the Pitch airs on Friday at 6pm and 10pm on TNT Sports 1 before being made available on demand.
