Rees: ‘Here in Bristol you’re always free to be whoever you want to be’
Marvin Rees has offered words of support to the LGBTQ+ community after two separate attacks took place in Bristol.
In late June, members of an annual Trans Pride Picnic were targeted by bb guns, just two weeks after a billboard advertising Bristol Pride was set alight less than 24 hours after it had been put up.
Writing on his blog, the mayor said: “These disappointing and disturbing acts are completely unacceptable.”

“It can be hard to feel positive in the face of such incidents,” he added.
“Events like these should serve as a reminder to us allies that we must continue to actively support the LGBTQIA+ community.”
Rees highlighted Bristol’s position as having the 15th highest LGBTQIA+ population ages 16 and over nationally.
“I’m proud to represent a city that does not simply tolerate each other but embraces one another with respect and dignity… You deserve respect, empathy, and dignity.”
Bristol Pride 2023 ends this weekend with Pride Day on the Downs on July 9, featuring Jake Shears and Natalie Imbruglia among more than 100 acts across the five stages.
