Hidden gardens opened to the public

By Kate Hutchison  Friday Jun 14, 2019

For those interested in gardening, or those who enjoy the finesse of innovative gardens, comes an exciting weekend trail organised by Blooming Bedminster.

Over the weekend of June 15 and 16, Bedminster’s Secret Gardens trail will allow the public to explore the area’s often hidden backyard greenery; from cider sheds to greenhouses in the sky.

Over 25 gardens will be open to the public between 12pm and 5pm and the free trail, which will feature gardens from across Bedminster, Southville and Ashton, pays tribute to diligent uses of small spaces.

Physical copies of the map are available or they can be downloaded through the Blooming Bedminster website

Matthew Symonds, one of the trail’s organisers, said: “most urban gardens are quite small, and some people find it hard to envision what they can do with their own city gardens.

“By visiting other people’s gardens, people will be amazed at what they can do to create an urban paradise in a pocket-sized space.”

Including an LGBTQ-inspired ‘She Shed’, open to the public on Saturday, and a sky-high greenhouse welcoming visitors on Sunday, the trail’s open spaces will differ across the weekend.

“Secret Gardens is a great opportunity to see some beautiful and imaginative green spaces in the city,” Matthew added.

The trail guide is free, but the organisers ask for a minimum donation of £2 per person. All proceeds will support local horticulture projects.

Visitors can download the trail guide or pick up a physical copy from various locations in south Bristol.
