Interview: (((ON PA))) & Adventure Bureau
On Saturday, December 16, the Cube Microplex welcomes a unique family show featuring two (or rather four) splendidly off-the-wall talents.
The double bill features sets from (((ON PA))), a collaboration between Japanese musician and inventor ICHI and folk artist Rachael Dadd. Their show is made up of mesmerising projections, live drawing, and buckets of sound waves. Then there’s a set from Adventure Bureau, a wild storytelling duo ho will weave a totally improvised story complete with a musical score, all from audience suggestions.
Here’s Katie Storer from the Bureau to tell us more.
is needed now More than ever
How did you all come together for this double bill?
We were both performing at Hoo-Ha! at Colston Hall earlier this year and absolutely loved each other’s shows. We got talking at the end and quickly became excited about the idea of performing a double bill together. Now we’re doing it!

(((ON PA)))
So, tell us more about (((ON PA)))…
Both shows are intended for families, including all ages of children but most likely 4-11-year-olds.
(((ON PA))) is an exploration of sound and vision. Rachael and Ichi create noises with unusual instruments, their bodies, mouths, and even objects like books and bowls of water. Through the use of an overhead projector Rachael creates live illustrations and images relating to the sounds that are being produced. It’s a very playful performance with plenty of opportunity for getting involved!
… and Adventure Bureau.
Adventure Bureau, on the other hand, is a purely improvised storytelling show. Katie and Simon invite the children (and adults who want to join in!) to draw an object, a character or a place and give the drawing to us on stage. Then Katie picks pictures out of the pile and improvises a story based on whatever comes up! While she’s doing this, Simon uses his incredible button box to improvise a live soundtrack, sound effects and songs reacting to whatever is happening in the story. It’s wildly unpredictable, exciting and a lot of fun!

Adventure Bureau
What sort of experience are children and adults in for?
They can expect to be enthralled, entertained, amused and enlivened! After previous Adventure Bureau shows we’ve had adults come up to us to say it’s their favourite children’s show they’ve seen – they had just as much fun as the kids!
What sorts of thoughts, curiosities, sensations do you hope to send people away with?
A sense of wonder in the music and magic that surrounds us in everyday sounds and objects – and a sense of possibility in the stories and adventures we can create at any moment if we feed our fertile imaginations!
