With the kids in Bristol: Woodsprings Wings Airshow 2018

By Maria Newman  Monday Jul 16, 2018

Something to look forward to every year is Woodspring Wings Airshow on the Somerset Levels near Yatton. It may sound geeky, but as the biggest model aircraft show in the South West attracting more than 5,000 visitors, it’s enjoyable for all the family.

Before the airshow gets into full swing, it’s always a good idea to buy yourself a Mr Whippy ice cream and find a good spot to watch the show from: then sit back, relax and watch the antics of the model aircraft flying in the skies.

Before long, the announcement came to line up for the toffee drop. The kids go crazy for this – it’s when a model aeroplane flies across the arena and drops toffees, then there’s a made dash as the kiddies try and grab as many as possible from the ground. There were no accidents, although the pilot’s aim this year was slightly off and some landed in the marsh.

But that’s not all, as there were lots of other treats in store. There were lots of scale model aircraft flying up above, and a range of different models demonstrated the skills of local pilots whilst children watched open-mouthed as they drew patterns in the sky.

When looking around the grounds to see what else was on offer, the bouncy castles quickly grab attention, which were fortunately enclosed so youngsters could cool down a little.

The Boat Pool is another opportunity for the children to get involved, plus the money raised goes towards the air ambulance. But as fun as driving a small remote-controlled boat is, the real highlight is the Battle of Woodspring.

This is a choreographed battle which captivates the audience every time: the spectacle of the battle in the skies, the technical ability of so many pilots to manoeuvre their aircraft without crashing, and the drama created by the pyrotechnics and dramatic music building to a grand crescendo of excitement as the allies win. It’s truly impressive.

The airshow has been getting bigger and better each year, with well-known aircraft like Spitfires, Red Arrows and Concorde present in miniature form, flown by talented pilots, as well as a flypast by a full size aircraft. An awesome time was had by all and there were plenty of activities to keep the children interested and involved.
