Autumn/Winter 2017 transitional fashion

By Emma Gorton-Ellicott  Tuesday Oct 17, 2017

As the not-so-hot Bristol summer comes to an end and our dreams of that belated Indian summer slip away, it’s time to face reality and accept that we need to start considering warmer clothing.

(Left) Contemporary cool heart-print long sleeved top by Emotional Waterfall Art – £25. Available from That Thing, Stokes Croft, and Hang Fire Gallery, North Street. (Right) Sustainable and stylish Mint Flec box jumper and Feather mono leggings by Antiform – £71.25 / £35. Available at To The Moon Boutique, Midland Road and www.antiformonline.co.uk.

Transitional fashion can cause a bit of confusion, but let’s consider the facts: we live in the UK, it rains through the summer and stays fairly mild in the winter. Conclusion: we pretty much wear transitional fashion all year round.

Keep a contemporary street style edge with this striped sweatshirt by That Thing – £40. Available from www.thatthing.co.

Transitional fashion has also become popular on the international catwalks, with many designers launching ‘resort wear’ collections. These practical fashion lines were originally created for the fashionable, jet-setting upper classes who would take holidays in warm climates during the winter, and as such were formerly known as ‘cruise wear’.

Stay monochrome cool in this quilted panel unisex sweatshirt and keep a contemporary street style edge with this striped sweatshirt , by That Thing – £38. Available from www.thatthing.co.

Those days are over, and resort wear has taken off in a big way ever since the rise in streetstyle and casualwear started being coveted by the high-end fashion designers and couturiers. Everyone wants a piece of the streetwear action, and with each resort wear collection, it is becoming less about holidaying and more about owning a functional, year-round wardrobe.

This men’s wool bomber is a perfect transitional piece that will see you right through to spring – £180 as will this classic, super soft Carlton merino knit ladies’ jumper – £85.Both by Peregrine Clothing. Available online at www.peregrineclothing.co.uk.

Are you one of those people sorting through their wardrobes to suit the season? I am a fashion lover but I have no interest in seasonalising my wardrobe. I go camping in the freezing cold summers, visit festivals in the rain and think nothing is wrong with a summer dress paired with tights and a fur coat in the winter. I love all of my clothes too much to hide them away for half the year.

Fashion forward, Loard Jesus reworked denim jacket by Tail End – £45. Contact designer Fran Rennison via www.tailend.co.uk or on Instagram and Facebook

Keep your wardrobe working all year-round – resort wear style – and add to it each season with new shapes, colours and styling ideas to keep things fresh.
