Bringing it home with That Thing interiors
Collaborating with many Bristol independent homeware designers, That Thing‘s interiors range incorporates contemporary, hand painted and geometrically cut plant pots, gorgeous handmade cushions, cool copper piping lamps, wired lampshades and graphic printed mugs all mixed in with retro rarities: perfect items to fill your modern vintage home.
As a fashion lover and self-confessed massive fan of That Thing, I was intrigued to hear that my favourite independent fashion house had launched an interiors range. Knowing how passionate That Thing’s owner Joh Riddom is about supporting Bristol and that Joh herself also has a great sense of creativity, which is always on point with a little added swagger, I found my curiosity being pushed aside to make way for an overwhelming need for all of the new interior goodies on offer.

Whilst clutching on to my newly-purchased copper cactus plant pot, I wondered what inspired Joh to start an interiors range.“It seemed a natural progression.” Joh explains in her usual bubbly and enthusiastic way. “I’ve always had a big fascination for homewares and interior design, and there are some great designers in this field in Bristol.”
That Thing are big promoters of the Bristol creative scene, with sixty designers currently available in-store, and it looks like adding an interiors range can only be beneficial to this Bristolian support network. “It’s monumental for us,” Joh continues. “Supporting local up-and-coming designers sits right at the core of our ethos, and it’s something we’re immensely proud of. We started out with around seven brands, and look how we’ve grown!
“I wanted to make sure the interiors sections works the same as the rest of the shop,” continues Joh, “so it’s to the same format in effect: local designers, a few own-brand things, and choice vintage items. So far we’ve got Homecrush, Dakota Rae Dust, Priormade, Miss4ire, RB Knitwear, among others. It’s an area I look forward to adding more designers to, so if anyone would like to get in contact and submit their range, then I’d love to hear from them!”
When asked which of these fabulous interiors items is her favourite Joh laughs and struggles to pick just one item, finally succumbing to my demands with a decisive reply: “My favourite designer item would have to be the cushions by Dakota Rae Dust. They’re absolutely gorgeous. She applies a whole range of technique to the process including fabric appliqué, vinyl transfers, printed appliqué, and both machine and hand-stitching, making each cushion unique!” Joh then lets us in on a guilty pleasure: “My favourite vintage item would have to be our little leopard statue! It’s so adorable, and part of me secretly hopes we never sell him!”
