Successful Bristol YouTuber Mermaid Gossip opens new nail bar

By Emma Gorton-Ellicott  Thursday Nov 23, 2017

The super successful Bristol-based YouTuber Mermaid Gossip, aka Emily Fisher, has opened The Gossip Nail Bar as part of a cool collaboration with the unique concept space Glitch on Old Market.

Emily is a natural. As a fashion YouTuber, she multitasks; filming videos in her garden shed while she paints her own nails and chats away giving advice and fun commentary in her tutorials. She edits all her own videos and is the graphic designer for her brand, Mermaid Gossip. Emily is also a fashion blogger, stylist and now runs a nail bar! Is there nothing this girl can’t do?

“I’m a bit of a jack of all trades to be honest,” Emily says. “I trained to be a graphic designer and also ran a photo booth company. I then became a blogger as I’ve always liked fashion and style.”

Emily is no stranger to understanding her brand after one of her YouTube tutorials on colouring your hair rose gold went viral and launched her into YouTube fame with more than four million views. “I just started getting more nail products, playing around with ideas, experimenting and just having fun really and thinking I love this look, how do you do that? There are so many nail products that are just so fun to work with. The nail videos are the most popular videos on my channel.”

Following her successes, Emily advises that you need to do your homework to get a YouTube video to go viral. “I did my rose gold video as I knew everybody was really in to it and it was a good search term that summer. I thought everyone’s talking about it, so let’s do it.

“One thing that helped that video was that it also had people saying ‘that’s not rose gold, its pink,’ so creating controversial topics that encourage people to comment is great. I got so much hate for that video but it totally grew my channel, so I thought well you carry on, as this is great!”

The Mermaid Gossip youtube channel now has well over 80,000 subscribers and counting.

Emily will post a YouTube video or tutorial a couple of times a week, with her videos honest, sweet and informative. On meeting her face to face you realise she really is dedicated to her channel and to what she believes in. There is an honest charm to her that makes Emily really likable and relatable and she even looks a bit like a mermaid too.

“I found I got much more response from people through video and people seem to relate to me,” explains Emily. “I love making YouTube videos and it’s such a nice little community. You build friends online and it’s a really good feeling to inspire others. I do a lot of work with plus-sized clothing and I get people saying, ‘I would never wear that but then I saw you wear it, you’ve inspired me to try out something new and feel comfortable in my own skin’. That’s rewarding enough!”

It was a natural progression from the blog and nail design tutorials to open a nail bar after lots of Emily’s followers asked her to do their nails and begged her to open a nail bar. On a chance visit to the hair salon at Glitch, Emily came up with an idea.

“There are no quirky nail bars in Bristol city centre,” says Emily. “I love Wah Nails in London. They are just ultimate goals for me! Glitch is such a great place to start. The guys are amazing here. I love the vibe and the industrial feel. I had my hair done here as a blogger and it was really random, I’d already thought about opening my own place, then I came to event here one Friday night, woke up the next day, still hungover and it just came to me, that Glitch would be perfect, the perfect fit!”

“I messaged Stephan from Glitch at 8am in the morning and asked if he’d ever thought about opening a nail bar and he replied, ‘Yes, we want a nail bar, when can you start?’ It was so quick and he was so on my wavelength. When I get a bee in my bonnet, I just take off! We came up from the idea from there.”

With fashion bloggers choosing different names varying from play on word nicknames, ironic names or using the latest buzz word to get themselves noticed as an individual blogger, where did the Mermaid Gossip name come from?

“It’s funny, I’m not that obsessed with mermaids,” Emily answers. “It’s more metaphoric I guess, being a bit different. I mean, I do love mermaids. I came up with lots of ideas but the mermaid just seemed to stick with me. Then I came up with Gossip, as a collective of mermaids is called a gossip which works really well, as you are blogging, you’re gossiping. That’s led to the Gossip Nail Bar which works really well as there’s nothing better than a good gossip whilst getting your nails done.”
