Meet Emma our new Fashion Editor

By Emma Gorton-Ellicott  Friday Jan 27, 2017

I started my blog No Debutante in 2011, after lots of people (including my husband a few years earlier, yes, Phil you were right) had been trying to get me to document my ever changing and random sense of style.

I was pregnant at the time so the blog started as a pregnancy fashion diary, I loved fashion but as my body changed I had to come up with creative ways to dress as I slowly grew bigger. In between the pregnancy fashion dilemma posts, I would write about my favourite designers, current obsessions, style icons and latest purchases.

After my daughter was born I did a few posts on post-pregnancy fashion before I was back in the fashion room and able to start wearing what I wanted again, I felt I had my identity back.

Independent journalism
is needed now More than ever
Keep our city's journalism independent.

I started attending a few fashion events in Bristol whilst continuing with my personal style posts and fashion favourites, the blog slowly started to move away from the high street as I became more interested in independent fashion designers and sustainable fashion. I had a background in sustainable fashion with my own fashion label back in the early 2000’s so I was really interested in the sustainable fashion scene in Bristol and started meeting like-minded people and designers including Fix Up Look Sharp, Kecks Clothing and Bristol Textiles Recyclers, who hold the most amazing Fashion Salvage events ever!

I have since written blog posts and collaborated with all three and have met and blogged about many other amazing Bristol indies that I love including That Thing, Tezla Designs, Neat Frontage, Zedhead Designs, Miss 4ire, Peskimo, To The Moon and Antiform, to name a few!

There is so much going on in Bristol that I barely have time to write about other independent labels, why promote about London’s independents when there is so much going on on your own doorstep?

My blog was never about monetising, collecting followers, getting sponsors or following high street trends, it is influenced by streetstyle, fashion independents, uniqueness and more recently sustainability with a fashion edge, I just wanted to talk about fashion and style because I love it, it’s more of a diary or a fanzine than anything else. I only ever write about things I am passionate about, it’s honest and I hope that is reflected in my writing.

I love Bristol and I love fashion. I plan to promote Bristol Fashion and local designers to the fullest. Bristol is a bubbling pot of creativity and the fashion scene is currently not being supported enough by Bristol or the UK.

We need to get Bristol on the fashion map, there is so much diverse talent here. Bristol beats to the sound of its own drum, it’s brilliant and deserves to be noticed.
