‘Take a look at your goals and work out the why behind each one’

By Jess Brown  Monday Apr 5, 2021

We’re all hoping that this is it: the last lockdown. And while we’re all looking forward to having a bit of normality back, some aspects might be making us feel under pressure – especially when it comes to exercise.

We know that Lockdown 3.0 was a toughie, with motivation at an all-time low for many of us. We know that lots of us feel as though our fitness levels have declined. We also know that plenty of us have got lots of gym goals in mind that we’ve been saving up until ‘everything gets back to normal’.

Of course, we love a goal here at F45 – they inspire us and help us to notice our achievements. But now that the deadline to get started on a year’s worth of goals is actually approaching, the pressure might be making the return to the gym feel like a very steep mountain to climb.

So, how do we move up that mountain? It’s all about taking it one step at a time. Firstly, take a look at your goals and work out the why behind each one. While lots of us might have heard the term ‘hot girl summer’ bandied about online, what do you actually need your body to be able to do enjoy our summer of (hopeful!) freedom?

I want to spend lots of time outside being active, after a few months of being quite comfy inside on the sofa. So, I want to build up a good base level of fitness to help me enjoy my plans and not get tired or injured. Thinking about what I’ve got to gain from going to the gym definitely helps me to feel more motivated and excited about heading to class.

Next, set yourself some short and medium-term goals to go along with those bigger ones. For me, being in a routine means that I don’t have to overthink exercise. So, when I first get back to the gym, my short-term goal is to go to a class on the same day each week – not too daunting, easy to achieve and a great starting point for me to work towards my future fitness aims.

Finally, outsource. While we sadly can’t get someone to do that sweaty workout for us, we can get someone to help us through it. At F45, our coaches work with every single member in each class to help them get the most out of it – and enjoy it!

Sign up to a session with a friend – push-ups definitely aren’t so tiring when you’ve got a pal doing them next to you. If we can find ways to enjoy it, we won’t even notice the climb – until we’re basking in the glorious view from the top.
