Yoga that’s ‘all about the women’
A unique yoga class for those who identify as women and are size 16 or above, Curvy Girl Yoga is a safe and supportive environment for practising the discipline for both beginners and those with more experience.
Launched in September 2017, Curvy Girl Yoga operates at three locations around Bristol every week.
Each class focuses on asanas (postures), pranayama (breathing exercises) and relaxation. However, there is also a large emphasis on having fun: “The women feel safe and empowered, they can talk freely without judgement, we laugh a lot,” says founder Devaki.
is needed now More than ever
“It’s an amazing bunch of women. They are all completely committed,” says Devaki, who is a yoga instructor as well.

Curvy Girl Yoga is the first plus-size yoga class in Bristol
Despite the name, Curvy Girl Yoga do not mention of body image or weight. Instead, Devaki aims to help bigger women achieve things they believe they can’t, saying: “It’s all about the women. If they want to discuss their bodies they have a safe space to do so, but it’s not about that.”
Devaki hopes to continue to let her classes grow organically, and aims to launch more sessions this year to ensure she meets the increasing demand for Curvy Girl Yoga.
She also has plans to launch a Curvy Girl brunch to connect the three classes across the city, saying: “They’re all such inspiring women, it would be great to meet and get to know each other outside of yoga.
“I’d love for my classes to give women the confidence to attend any yoga class they like. It’s amazing to see them achieve what they never thought they could. It touches me deeply.”
