Edible Bristol are launching a new course
Edible Bristol are launching a new course that will bring accessible horticultural learning to the city. The course is aimed at people who are considering taking a step into land based, horticultural careers, whether that might be growing salad, veg, flowers, herbs or ornamentals, and will take them through a year of growing, mixed with classroom based learning at Edible Bristol’s Cultivation Place in Speedwell.
Over the last few years the need for accessible, business based courses to help people get into growing careers has become more and more apparent to Edible Bristol, hence their work to bring this course to fruition. It’s well documented that there is an interest in commercial growing in the city, and that many people are interested in taking such a leap, so the hope is that Growing Futures will support those people. As the One City Plan has food growing in its aims, ensuring the skills to succeed for new entrant growers has never been more needed, especially as Bristol City Council has committed to making appropriate land available for food growing by the end of the decade.

Beginning in mid February Growing Futures will run each Thursday, term time only to allow for child care during holidays which Edible Bristol has recognised is often a barrier to many feeling these opportunities are for them, and will run through to mid October, covering a full season of growing. Growing Futures will focus on agro- ecological growing, growing food that also supports nature, with a large focus on soil health, seasonal growing and growing a business based on good growing practice.
The course will be taught by Edible Bristol’s founder, horticulturalist Sara Venn, and Luke Murray who is a permaculturist and woodsman, and there will be plenty of opportunity to hear from and visit local growers, and learn about the huge variety of land based opportunities there are. Between our tutors they have 40+ years of experience.
So if you have ever thought about making a move into a land based career this is definitely the course for you. For further information, costs and to book your place, drop a line to sara@ediblebristol.org.uk and Edible Bristol will get back to you and sign you up!
