TOP INDIE GAMES OF 2022 (SO FAR)

By Josh OHara  Friday Jul 15, 2022

Indie games are the darling of the gaming world, with smaller dev teams taking on interesting
projects which often forward the entire landscape of gaming through new gameplay mechanics or
interesting narrative debates.
Here are some of the top Indie Games released in 2022 thus far!
Hyperbolica – CodeParade
A whimsical and niche endeavour, Hyperbolica presents some of the most mind-bendingly
experimental gameplay you may ever experience. Why is this? Well, because the world doesn’t
respond how you’d expect. Instead of normal three-dimensional reality, Hyperbolica takes place in
Non-Euclidean geometry which quite literally shatters our understanding of how the world should
work.
One example; if you go through a door to your right, then another to your right, one more to your
right and then a final one you should be exactly where you started—right? Well, not in this reality!
For incredibly mind-bending world design this one is a must play. Oh, and did I mention you can
experience this insanity in VR?!
Have a Nice Death – Magic Design Studios
Oozing with character and charm, Have A Nice Death is a 2D action roguelike which could be
envisioned as somewhere between Hollow Knight and Ori and the Blind Forest—albeit as a
roguelike.
You play as the grim reaper, running around with your trusty scythe balancing the scales on the souls
who should rightfully be dead.
Featuring over thirty weapons and spells which can be put together for some satisfying combos, the
game incorporates plenty of RogueLite gameplay mechanics which will satisfy those who are looking
to avoid the punishing side of the genre.
OlliOlli World – Roll7
Sequel to the popular 2D adventure, OlliOlli is a bold new take on skateboarding which overflows
with vibrant, colourful personality. It will see you skate through a wealth of environments in the
world of Radlandia as you slowly master the inner workings of your skateboard.
Expanding on the original title by adding a whole host of systems and changing its aesthetic (it used
to be pixel art) OlliOlli World game may just be the only skating experience that’s been worth playing
in recent memory.
Tunic – TUNIC Team
Drawing both visually and mechanically from classic The Legend of Zelda titles—even baring a clear
resemblance to the recent remake of Link’s Awakening—Tunic helps to bring Nintendo’s beloved
formula to PC, Mac and Xbox gamers.
Equipped with a sword and craftiness, your anthropomorphic fox is ready to explore the gorgeously
rendered world filled with puzzles, monsters and plenty of isometric action.

It is an experience which overflows with charm—a testament to solo developer Andrew Shouldice
who worked for around six years on this project.

Sifu – Sloclap
Breathing life into the long-dying beat ‘em up genre, French studio Sloclap took a lot of risks with
Sifu. However, their mastery of tight systems and intriguing trade-offs make Sifu a game you may
well want to play multiple times.
Not only does the game look a treat, rendering its lesser-explored Chinese locales in an awesome
style, but it plays like a dream. Seeing you dispatch foes with your hand-to-hand combat.
While snappy fighting controls are nothing new, the game’s aging mechanic is. This mechanic
incorporates defeat into the mechanics of the game, seeing each knockout cause the player
character to get up older—making them stronger but less agile. This sees your stats and playstyle
change throughout the game, but also gives failure a real, tangible weight.
Sifu is available on PlayStation and Epic Games Store.
A Memoir Blue – Cloisters Interactive
Combining an aesthetic concoction of hand-drawn and 3D art, Memoir Blue is an “interactive poem
about a superstar athlete and the all-encompassing love between mother and daughter”. As such a
description suggests, this title foregrounds narrative, taking you through a personal journey of a
turbulent childhood and complicated parental relationship.
This touching tale is surely one that you will remember if its subject matter connects with you. And
while it most certainly isn’t a game for everyone, fans of deep narrative games will certainly
appreciate its magic.
And given it is published by the leading Annapurna Interactive, its quality can be somewhat assured.
