Ethical clothing and gift shop to close

By Betty Woolerton  Tuesday Jan 2, 2024

The owner of a clothing and gift shop in Wapping Wharf has blamed the “current economic situation” as she announced its closure.

Frankly, owned by Helen Symonds, champions being ethical and charitable, encouraging people to “buy less, but buy better”.

Based in Cargo 2 in Wapping Wharf, it uses a retail model that has a fairer split of profits, focuses on the quality and story behind products and aims to be more sustainable for people and the planet.

But Symonds said the independent store, which opened in October 2020, was “just not viable”.

In a statement, she said: “After three years here at Wapping Wharf we have made the tough decision to close our little container shop.

“It has been a roller coaster journey navigating a pandemic, social distancing and who can forget the bridge closure!

“But most of all it has been A LOT of fun and it has been an absolute pleasure being part of the Wapping Wharf community.

“I want to say a HUGE thank you to our loyal and supportive customers who have made every day here a joy.

“I know it takes effort to shop small and local and we appreciate every penny that you have spent with us.

“I am not currently 100% sure when are last day will be but do keep an eye on our social media for updates.

“We will continue  to trade online and you never know we. may pop up somewhere else in the future, keep your eyes peeled!

Prior, a lifestyle and design shop in Quakers Friars, Cabot Circus, was among a raft of people who reacted with sadness to the news.

“I am very sorry to hear this but I also want to send a message of congratulations too,” they said. “It’s such a hard choice to close the doors and I’m totally inspired by those who choose realistic options for the future of their businesses. I know it must’ve been a ridiculously hard decision that wasn’t made lightly. Well done for making it.”

A spokesperson for Wapping Wharf added: “We’d like to bid farewell to the wonderful Frankly, who are closing their store here at Wapping Wharf.

“Helen, Alice and the team have been a huge part of our community for three years and they’ll be massively missed, but don’t worry – you can still shop their wonderful range of ethical and sustainable gifts, accessories and more on their website.”
