Latin market shop opens in Stokes Croft

By Hannah Massoudi  Sunday Nov 10, 2024

A Latin market shop has opened in Stokes Croft this weekend. The shop serves products from a diverse range of Latin countries across the world.

Morales Latin Market has been launched by Ana Morales, daughter of Osvaldo Morales who owns Cafe Cuba, also in Stokes Croft, and Morales Cafe.

A selection of dried food goods, including refried beans, cassava crisps, traditional tortillas and salsa

On the opening of the store, Ana says “I always wanted something to feel like home,” something she says she struggled to find in Bristol, which spurned her to seize the opportunity to create something of her own.

The space that has now become her shop was somewhat of a last minute discovery, having searched for the ideal location for quite sometime before she found it last month.

Being near to her father’s restaurant, which sits at 69 Stokes Croft, was a priority for her. And while this is Ana’s first solo business venture, based on her family’s success in Bristol, she no doubt will be busy.

Fresh bread and cake sits on the counter, tempting those with its smell

Her store stocks many foods that cannot be found anywhere else and come direct from many of the different Latin countries across the world, from cassava bread, benta cake, Colacao. The selection will most certainly remind people of foods that they might not have had outside of their home countries.

Many of the sweets contain spices as she tells me, many people like almost everything they eat to contain a kick. Ana also offers options that are more hearty with fresh soup, which changes daily, cheeses, meat and a selection of freshly baked goods.

The store also has beauty products specifically designed to Afro hair and curls

According to Ana the Latin community in Bristol is huge, and she welcomes anyone who might want to use the space upstairs for events.

From next week the store will also be serving coffee and opening the upstairs room, where customers can sit and eat.
