An Old Market store with big ambitions for Bristol has been nominated for a national community award.

Lifestyle store and creative space Good Store Studio has been nominated for the Community Brand Award in the Independent Awards 2020.

Created to showcase and recognise the very best of creative small businesses across the UK and spearheaded by Holly Tucker MBE, founder of Notonthehighstreet, the Community Brand Award recognises businesses who are built around their communities.

“Good Store Studio has always been about providing a community driven space that everyone could enjoy,” says owners Beth Izzard, Josie Irvine and Emma White.

“Winning such a prestigious award would be such a huge confidence boost, it would reinforce to us that what we’re doing is great and we’re visible in the independent industry as such a small and new operation.

“The recognition of being seen as an important community brand and feeling of accomplishment would propel us to keep evolving and growing Good Store Studio.”

“Good Store Studio was built by the community, for the community so winning the Community Brand Award would feel like we’ve come full circle,” say the three founders. Photo: Good Store Studio

The space, which is a collaboration between local independents The DIY Supermarket, run by Beth, Palace Flophouse, run by Josie, and Duvet Days, by Emma, has been selected from thousands of nominations, down to six categories with 12 nominees in each.

The store has also been nominated in the People’s Choice category, which will open for voting following the end of the voting period for the six other categories – which ends on Thursday, December 3.

“The exposure of even just being nominated for this award is incredible and we hope will bring new customers and contacts which would be beneficial to the makers that we stock, but also for the Bristol independent scene, helping us pay back into our own local wonderful community,” the trio say.

“Being such a small fish in a big pond with these nominations has had an incredibly positive effect on us in this hard year and to win would be truly overwhelming, in a good way!”

The Community Brand Award is voted for by public vote and overseen by judges Emily Coxhead, creator of the Happy News and Joe Wicks, TV presenter and fitness coach.

Good Store Studio, which initially opened as a pop-up store inside Two’s Company Studios in early 2019, before moving in a permanent space in what was previously Dainese, a motorbike store, in 2020, stocks goods from more than 50 Bristol creatives.

The store is also part of the Shop Bristol campaign, a directory of local independents selling over the festive season.

“We’re the only Bristol based nomination across all the categories which is pretty amazing,” say Beth, Josie and Emma.

“The Bristol independents scene is such a brilliant scene to be part of and by being nominated for this award we hope that we’re showing the rest of the UK what Bristol is made of!”
