Shop of the Week: Plant Studio, Bedminster

By Elizabeth Abbott  Thursday Jan 9, 2025

Plant Studio is an oasis of green.

Located on vibrant North Street, the outside of the shop is painted with charming multi-coloured shapes, the display enhanced by a magical front of a luscious plant selection and glistening fairy lights.

After being welcomed by huge grin, I walked through the network of flower-adorned nooks, to the back of Plant Studio where Devaki Jones, the owner, was unpacking their newest arrival.

Additional to plants, the shop sells other gifts for plant lovers

Devaki was enthused to discuss the shop’s origins: “We opened in March 2023. We’re nearing our two-year mark.”

After working as a freelance photographer for about 20 years, Devaki wanted a change of pace.

She explained: “I didn’t want to travel so much doing the photography work.

“The opportunity for the space came about and it was something I had been I guess maybe daydreaming about for quite some time and the opportunity to make it happen, happened so I decided: alright, let’s give it a go.

“I absolutely adore plants. I have a big collection at home. I had been collecting for quite some time.”

She speaks about the local neighbourhood with a glowing fondness: “I love North Street, I love the community spirit of the neighbourhood, I love the people that come in. I don’t think we could have picked a better spot.”

The shop’s website includes tutorials for plant enthusiasts, including “The Art of Watering Houseplants”

Devaki spoke through the shop’s huge selection of plants, from succulents to tropicals, Philodendrons to Orchids.

“My goal of the plant shop is to have a plant in here that you’ve never seen before.”

When asked if she had a favourite plant among the abundance of beautiful flora, Devaki said: “I think my favourite plant changes from week to week.”

Currently, beautiful Epiphyllums are about to bloom so these are her favourite, but she hastens to add this is just “at the moment.

“We get new stuff in every week so there are a lot of plant enthusiasts who come in and check and see what new stock we have.

“We also have a repotting service here so people can bring in their plants that need a bit of TLC, so we’ll repot them for them, using our own custom-make soil mixes.”

Plant Studio doesn’t list their outdoor plants online so if you want to purchase one you must visit in person

The shop has recently started running workshops, offering hands-on guidance in how to create things including terrariums – mini-ecosystems, and Kokedamas – a Japanese art of moss ball planting.

Devaki is hoping to get their “back patio a little bit revamped come spring to have a little garden party for our two-year anniversary.”

She aspires for the shop to be a “mini-mark garden centre [with] little bedding plants, pollinator friendly plants, hopefully some nice herbs and veg.”

For Plant Studio, the future is “super exciting.”
