Motorhome from home

By Ruth Morris  Tuesday May 29, 2018

To make the most of the glorious weather, we decided that a weekend away was in order and hired a vehicle from The Motorhome Holiday Company.

Their catchphrase is ‘motorhome hire made simple’ and true to their word, the company have a clear pricing structure and deal with paperwork in advance to avoid any last-minute problems.

Customer service is also at the heart of this family-run company: pick up from their base near junction 21 of the M5 was smooth, with Matt (the owner of the company) giving us a thorough walk through of the motorhome before we set off in it.

We were travelling with a two-year-old and a six-year-old and so hired a six-berth motorhome to give us the space we required. This had two fixed king-size beds, one over the cab (which filled the six-year-old with joy) and one at the rear.

In the centre was a table that sat four people and could also be converted into a double bed if required. The fixed bed option worked well for us as there was no faffing around putting beds up at the end of each day.

The motorhome also had a well-equipped kitchen, which came with all the essentials including soap, washing up liquid, sponge, bin liners and a dustpan and brush. There was also a separate bathroom with a toilet, sink, shower and even toilet paper supplied.

It’s these little extras that make such a difference: as any seasoned family camper will know, they are the necessities most often forgotten in the rush to pack up the children.

The motorhome also had ample storage, making packing for the journey an easy process. We quickly made up the beds, packed the clothes, toiletries and children’s games into the cupboards and stored the larger items (surfboards, wetsuits, bikes and a pushchair) into the garage at the rear of the van. We also put a few items in the fridge to make sandwiches once we arrived.

With overexcited kids belted into their seats at the table, we set off for a weekend in St Ives. At seven metres long, our motorhome was a very big vehicle but one that was surprisingly easy to manoeuvre. The drive was smooth, the seats were very comfortable and with one stop in Exeter, the four hours passed easily.

We were booked into Ayr Holiday Park, which has amazing views overlooking St Ives and is a ten-minute walk into the town. The toilet block is very well maintained and there is a lovely children’s play area that parents can supervise from a terrace with stunning views across the ocean. There is also a small indoor pool at the campsite’s Garrack Hotel, which was great for cooling off after a day on the beach. Campers can use the pool for £2.50.

The motorhome soon became a home from home, with bikes, toys and camping chairs strewn around. The king size beds really came into their own as three of the four of us all ended up in one bed – ridiculous in a six-berth van, but that’s kids for you – and the the well-fitting blinds mean that the van isn’t flooded with daylight as soon as the sun comes up.

In the morning, breakfast was quickly cooked up in the kitchen and egg, bacon and sausage sandwiches were soon enjoyed at the picnic bench alongside the van.

The six-berth motorhome was surprisingly easy to manouvere

Camping in a motorhome is like being on an adventure. It’s a chance to reconnect with your inner child, the great outdoors, and, most importantly, with your family. Sun-kissed and happy, we were sad to drive home and seriously debated ditching work and school and heading off into the sunset… maybe next year.

Motorhome rental from The Motorhome Holiday Company starts from £100 per day. Visit www.motorhomeholidaycompany.com for more information.
