Bristol Charity Advent Calendar 2018, day 13: All-Aboard Watersports
Based in Bristol’s picturesque Floating Harbour, All-Aboard Watersports aims to get the people of Bristol engaged in watersports, including those who may otherwise feel unable to. They support and facilitate the inclusion of people with physical, emotional or cognitive disabilities or infirmities of all ages who feel that there are barriers to their participation.
Established in 1974, the charity was initially set up to provide sailing lessons to Bristol and Bath state school students who would otherwise be unlikely to have access to watersports. Taking over the Bristol Sailing School in the 1980s they then began to channel their profits to support the growing charity, and the focus shifted to allowing more people to get out on the water, from individuals with physical and mental disabilities to people suffering financial hardship.
Working with health providers and other charities the charity now offer watersports as a means of rehabilitation, with all instructors being specially trained to support people who may need additional help. They also have fully accessible facilities and specially adapted vessels and equipment to ensure everyone is able to get stuck in.
is needed now More than ever
Their aim is to build a more inclusive watersporting community in Bristol, and offer a range of activities including sailing, rowing, canoeing, kayaking, and powerboating.
