Bristol Charity Advent Calendar 2018, day 7: Bristol ARC
The bright frontage of Bristol Animal Rescue Centre (ARC) in St Phillip’s, designed by local street artist Cheo, has quickly become a local landmark since being painted in May this year.
Having rebranded from RSPCA Bristol in January, the charity has continued its mission to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome animals. Annually they help 14,000 animals and have been doing this since 1887. This makes them one of the oldest and biggest local animal charities in the UK.
Bristol ARC runs a round-the-clock centre for pet and wildlife emergencies, with a goal of preventing cruelty and promoting kindness to animals. To do this, they follow the RSPCA’s five freedoms:
is needed now More than ever
- Freedom from hunger and thirst
- Freedom from discomfort
- Freedom from pain, injury and disease
- Freedom to express normal behaviour
- Freedom from fear and distress
When rescuing animals, they follow a non-selective intake policy. They will not turn away any animals which need their help, and they prioritise the most vulnerable animals – for example, those signed over to the RSPCA because of concerns about their welfare.
They also provide vet services, some at reduced costs for anyone experiencing financial hardship. Free cat chipping is available for all Bristol residents. This care is crucial for crucial for animals belonging to people on lower incomes who would otherwise struggle to cover large vet bills.
Despite affiliation with the RSPCA, the charity receives no automatic funding from them, and instead relies on community support to keep doing their vital work for Bristol’s four-legged friends.
