Bristol Charity Advent Calendar 2019, day 19: Caring in Bristol
Caring in Bristol, formerly known as Caring at Christmas, was first formed in 1987 by members of the Julian Trust Charity.
Created in response to the particular gap in provision for homeless and vulnerable people during Christmas and the new year and volunteers opening their first 24-hour shelter, which ran over five days during the festive period, in St Thomas Church.

From humble beginnings, the charity has grown in popularity and size over the past three decades.
In the early 2000’s, the charity expanded to develop an annual homeless survival so vulnerable people could find services across the city during the festive period.
In 2006, the charity took on the Bristol Nightstop project to help find emergency provision in volunteer’s houses for young people aged 18-25 at risk of homelessness. Bristol Nightstop continued to expand and, in 2016, Caring in Bristol took on the 365 Shelter to provide emergency night shelter support to people experiencing homelessness every night of the year.
Caring in Bristol supports the homeless community throughout the year
Over Christmas and the new year, Caring in Bristol is particularly active to ensure the city’s most vulnerable people are cared for. Caring at Christmas helps those facing homelessness at Christmas.
The Caring at Christmas project has been helping those experiencing homelessness in Bristol for more than 30 years, providing shelter and support to everyone who needs it for the ten days over Christmas and New Year.
Over the ten days that our Caring at Christmas 2018 project ran, Caring in Bristol provided day support to an average of 84 people each day, bed spaces for an average of 47 people each night and served 3,902 meals.

“We find gaps in Bristol’s provision for people experiencing homelessness and work together with our community to create innovative projects to fill them,” say Caring in Bristol. “From prevention to emergency support, our projects range from producing free citywide resources that empower our city to act, to investing in youth support, helping influence change from the very start.
“Homelessness is not a simple issue with a simple solution. At Caring in Bristol, we believe in community solutions to community problems. We need your support to continue to tackle homelessness and support people in need in our city.”
