By Lowie Trevena  Thursday Dec 3, 2020

Creating a society where young people from all backgrounds can achieve their full potential, Jacari supports children with English as an additional language to improve their confidence and language skills.

Providing free, one-to-one tutoring for migrant, asylum-seeking, and refugee children aged from six to 16 in Bristol and further afield in Oxford.

As well as tutoring, the Jacari team organise free trips and events for children, their families and turor, social events for volunteers and teaching workshops.

“Our team of amazing volunteers currently support over 50 local children, helping them once a week to improve their English language skills and confidence,” says Anna Bowie, senior coordinator at the charity.

“We’ve kept supporting the children throughout the pandemic, delivering lessons online and over the phone, as now more than ever, they need some extra help to catch up, do well at school and fulfil their potential.”

There are more than 12,000 school-aged young people who have English as an additional language across Bristol and Jacari finds that these children can have their attainment impacted by lack of resource surrounding English as an additional language.

Jacari provides these children with a tutor, not just to support their English skills or set them up for success in exams, but to create “a sense of belonging”, helping them fulfil their potential and improving their confidence.

“We estimate that we currently work with fewer than five per cent of the young people in need of extra support in Bristol,” say the Jacari team.

“Our programme is invaluable for helping young people build up their confidence and language skills and allow them to achieve their full potential.”
