Bristol Charity Advent Calendar 2020, day 9: DigiLocal

By Bristol24/7  Tuesday Dec 8, 2020

DigiLocal aims to advance the education of young people in the UK from groups that are under-represented within the technology industry by supporting communities to run free tech clubs for their young people.

To help tackle the fact that career ambitions are severely limited for many people even by the age of seven, DigiLocal’s clubs promote the problem solving skills and resilience that are critical to developing a career.

This is done through self-directed learning within a friendly club environment, aiming to excite young people about the opportunities that tech can hold for them.

Keep our city's journalism independent.

Recognising that the tech industry needs to adjust its view of young people from diverse backgrounds, DigiLocal – based at Engine Shed next to Temple Meads – draws its volunteers mainly from industry, not from teaching or social care backgrounds,

They often work closely with a number of employers to provide them with a CSR (corporate social responsibility) volunteering ‘package’ for their staff to support local communities.

DigiLocal support and empower those with an interest in technology within their communities, also building a community of likeminded individuals who wish to open access to technology and coding to all.

They provide a safe, fun, and supportive environment for young people to learn skills that will equip them for technologies that are an increasingly important part of our day-to-day lives, providing opportunities and choice for people to pick their own path, what they want to learn, and how they want to join in.
