Bristol Charity Advent Calendar 2021, day 21: Suicide Prevention Bristol
An increase in people asking taxi drivers to take them to known ‘suicide spots’ led to the launch of a new campaign this summer.
Suicide Prevention Bristol’s ‘Not The Last Stop’ project focused on education, support and raising awareness so that drivers are more likely to be able to read the signs that someone is in crisis and know what to do.
The volunteer-run charity works alongside local services to ensure the best intervention is made to protect that person from suicide, alongside educating and providing support for taxi drivers. It also opened a dedicated number for cabbies to call for advice or support.
is needed now More than ever
It is just one of a number of ways in which Suicide Prevention Bristol works across the city to provide support for people in their darkest hours.
The charity has volunteers to walk the paths of areas in the city known as ‘suicide spots’ during the night to notice if people there are feeling suicidal or generally unwell and struggling with their mental health.
It provides “the last line of support in the most difficult time of someone’s life and shows them that people care”.
Suicide Prevention Bristol also operates support services over the phone, via the National Suicide Prevention Helpline UK, social media and out in the community.
The volunteers use skills in crisis intervention to offer supportive listening to start a dialogue and to encourage more hopeful solutions than suicide. They work alongside local services and signpost people to where they can access support.
