Bristol Charity Advent Calendar 2022, Day 4: Fall Proof, Wesport

By Mia Vines Booth  Saturday Dec 3, 2022

For day four of our charity advent calendar, Bristol24/7 is spotlighting a new campaign from sports charity Wesport, which aims to inspire people of all ages and backgrounds to take part in physical activities.

Wesport began in 2006, and has since worked with a wide variety of local partners to enable the delivery of nationally-funded sports programmes.

They believe that physical movement can have a transformative impact on the lives of people, including their health and wellbeing.

Through providing leadership, expertise and resources, Wesport is improving the variety and accessibility of sporting opportunities for local people by actively developing clubs, coaching and volunteering.

Wesport also work with the local council to support sporting activities in educational environments such as schools, colleges and universities.

They also connect with community organisations, such as disability, culturally diverse communities, women and girl’s groups, social housing and community health organisations to get more people involved in sport and physical activity.

Wesport’s most recent campaign, Fall-proof, is aimed at giving the tools to people to improve their strength and balance to prevent falling and mitigate the impacts of falls.

Falls are one of the biggest reason people get referred to hospital. Wesport’s programme of “fall-proof” exercises hopes to help elderly people and those with disabilities to maintain their independence and enable them to keep doing the everyday things they enjoy.

Wesport hopes to make the campaign as accessible as possible.

“People in more deprived areas of Bristol don’t necessarily have the resource to pay for £10 Pilates classes,” said Saliha, senior project manager for Aging Well at Wesport.

“We wanted to do some awareness raising about falls and link that of ideas to presents for older relatives for christmas.”

Bristol residents can pick up printed copies of the “Fall-proof” Booklet and “Move to Improve” cards by visiting one of the pick up points below:
