Bristol Charity Advent Calendar 2024, day 16: The Family Centre (Deaf Children)
From a primary school in Horfield, The Family Centre (Deaf Children) supports families living with deafness in Bristol and surrounding areas including Bath, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset.
They do this by regularly hosting in-person and online events for families, carers and young people as well as offering counselling, play therapy and family British Sign Language courses.
They also regularly run a ‘teddy clinic’ – where deaf children bring in teddy bears to be fitted with hearing aids.

The Family Centre also has a youth group for deaf children aged 11-18 so that the kids have more of a chance to bond with each other and connect.
The charity’s stated aims are to:
- “Improve family cohesion within the families of deaf children.
- Improve communication within families.
- To develop children’s deaf identity, self-confidence and self-esteem
- To reduce isolation, increase socialisation and strengthen links with the community of deaf children and their families.
- Improve deaf awareness within families and the community.”
The charity’s office is based at the Elmfield School for Deaf Children which recently relocated its primary school from Westbury-on-Trym to Horfield.
Although its headquarters are in Horfield, The Family Centre hosts events across different venues in Bristol and beyond.
