Bristol Charity Advent Calendar 2024, day 4: Bristol Animal Rescue Centre
Founded in 1887, Bristol’s Home for Lost and Starving Dogs was set up by Edward T Parker after he found a lost puppy in a snowstorm.
In the early years the charity only had six kennels but, by the early 20th century, had grown exponentially and eventually developed cat boarding quarters and an infirmary.
In the 1950s, the charity partnered with the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) and became known as Bristol Dogs and Cats Home before changing its name again in 2018 to the Bristol Animal Rescue Centre.
is needed now More than ever
Although the charity is affiliated with the RSPCA it receives no automatic funding from them.

For over 130 years, the Bristol Animal Rescue Centre (ARC) has been a safe haven for thousands of animals across the city.
Come rain or shine, they regularly find and take in lost and stray animals like Jax, who spent the night tied to a post at Temple Meads station before he was rescued by a member of the public.
Eventually, many of the dogs, cats and small animals the ARC cares for are fostered or permanently adopted by members of the public. Currently, there are 34 animals available for adoption.
The ARC also hosts weekly drop-in clinics from community centres in Lawrence Weston and Knowle West, providing veterinary care for pet owners on lower incomes.
