Bristol Charity Advent Calendar 2024, Day 8: Nilaari

By Seun Matiluko  Saturday Dec 7, 2024

Nilaari is a Black-led charity which offers mental health support to people across the UK, with a particular focus on people from Black, Asian and minoritised communities.

They define minoritised communities as ‘groups who are discriminated against and subordinated in status to a more dominant group on the grounds of race, culture, colour or nationality’.

From their base in Easton, Nilaari offer in-person and online group therapy for men and women as well as 1-2-1 talking therapy and practical support.

They also provide training to large organisations on cultural diversity and collaborates with several universities, including Durham and the University of Bristol, to offer therapy sessions to students of colour.

Between 2022-23, 45 per cent of those who used Nilaari’s services did so through self-referral.

24 per cent were referred by community organisations while 15 per cent were referred to by their GP or health provider.

From 2024-25, Bristol24/7 will partner with Nilaari to amplify their work and connect them with local businesses which may be able to help provide administrative, funding and marketing support.

Nilarri is part of the Mental Health Alliance for the Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire area. The Alliance also includes Bristol Mind and Bristol Somali Resource Centre.

Nilaari’s goal is to ensure everyone is ‘afforded the chance to realise their upmost potential and enjoy genuine social inclusion, devoid of any discrimination’.
