Congratulations to the latest cohort of Young Chefs
At the end of 2019, the young people on the How To Be A Chef course graduated in style.
The ceremony, which took place at The Park Community Centre on December 19, celebrated three months of hard work from the young people involved.
Hosted by the Square Food Foundation in partnership with Bristol24/7, the How To Be A Chef course is 12-weeks long and take
place several times a year. The latest cohort spent two days a week in the Square Food Kitchen in Knowle West and a third day in kitchens across the city, learning the basics of catering and how to work in a professional food and drink business.

“Kaci’s doing fantastic work here, and hopefully learning lots about how food is produced as well as all the other aspects of working as part of a team in a professional kitchen,” says Windmill Hill cafe manager Anna Ralph
The accredited programme taught Diccon, Elliot, Kaci, Calum and Verity the cooking skills and food knowledge needed to work in a professional kitchen. They also received Level 2 BTEC in Home Cooking Skills and a Food Hygiene Certificate.
The young people also got to learn about the range of careers available in catering. They visited Jekka’s Herb Garden near Thornbury and cooked a feast for industry professionals, who visited the chefs for lunch.

Bristol24/7 wants to thank all the businesses that support the project, from the recruitment manager of Hyde&Co to the owner of a one- person vegan catering business.
Learning invaluable skills to land a career in the food and drink industry, from making bread and pastries, to butchery and pickling, the How To Be A Chef course has been a great success thanks to all the restaurants, caterers and partners supporting the project. Congrats, Young Chefs!
