Bosco

Neapolitan-style pizzas, plus pasta, salads, meat and fish dishes inspired by travels through Italy and the USA are the core offerings at Bosco. Choose between the stylish dining spot in Clifton Village or atmosphere of the original restaurant on Whiteladies Road. Fine wines, desserts, antipasti, pastas and classic dishes like slow-roasted porchetta pork belly are also on the menu. Open Mon-Sun midday-10pm.
“This place has atmosphere oozing from every nook, cranny and pizza oven.” – Andy Clarke, Television Food Series Producer

“It’s all about the fungi pizza laced with truffle oil. You can tell all the ingredients have been sourced with care and knowledge from the prosecco to the olives, to the charcuterie.” – Ursula Hutchinson, Konichiwa
Bravas
7 Cotham Hill, BS6 6LD
Authentic tapas to share with pals are teamed with Spanish wines and beers plus tortillas, seafood dishes and salads at this lively restaurant-cum-café-bar. This is the best tapas experience in Bristol so grab a coveted seat at the bar and bed in for the night. Plans for a second tapas bar in Cargo 2 have morphed into a Mexican-style tacos joint, Cargo Cantina. We can’t wait to be pulling up a seat at the bar there when it opens soon after this guide went to press in May 2017. Open Mon-Weds 11.30am-11pm; Thurs-Sun 11.30am-midnight.
“I think this is the best tapas/wine bar in Bristol. Really good fun and great food although super busy so need to book or get there early!” – Pete Snowman, Bristol Cider Shop
“There are so many awesome restaurants in Bristol but Bravas is my absolute favourite. I’ve been eating here since it opened and the food is incredible. The menu changes regularly (with a few staples staying on permanently) and I can honestly say I’ve never had a bad dish there.” – Dan Bekhradnia, The Burger Joint
“Another great tapas option. Sit up at the bar and order a cold fino then let the small plates keep on coming. Busy, a little squished but all the better for it.” – Elly Curshen, The Pear Cafe
“There are many reasons to visit Cotham Hill, and Bravas is one of them. Tapas with flavour that explodes in the mouth, this tiny place has a great selection of wines by the glass, fab character and is perfect for a reason getting home late.” – Andy Clarke, TV Food Producer
Bulrush
21 Cotham Road South, BS6 5TZ
Enjoy modern British food at this restaurant, including items foraged from hedgerows and coastal hideaways. Much of the food is sourced from the South West, including Cornish mussels and local cheeses. Dietary requirements can be catered for with advance notice. The £38 tasting menu is the perfect way to experience the myriad of Bulrush delights for the first time. First down the hatch was a plump native oyster with a white currant and sake granite like a gentle frosting of Christmas snow. Anton the forager had been to Ashton Court to find the Alexander celery for the soup – served in a sturdy pottery bowl made in Portmeirion. Open from Thurs-Sat 12.30-3pm; Tues-Sat 6.30-9pm.
“Bulrush is everything a local bistro should be. They always use amazing produce, amazing techniques and the food is very progressive. You can have a hearty pork jowl to start, followed by Suffolk Mutton or an amazing eight course tasting menu.” – Josh Eggleton, The Pony & Trap
“I’m just a massive fan of George and Katherine and what they’re doing. George has got something special. As time goes on I think you’re going to see something really amazing from George. His food is a bit out of the box. He takes inspiration from Japan, loves the Nordic route, but I think really that his food is all about local produce and our surroundings, but then he puts his twist on it by using something which is maybe Nordic- or Japanese-inspired. It’s a game-changer from a gastronomy point of view at a destination restaurant because it is simple, everything is stripped back. I love that place.” – Peter Sanchez-Iglesias, Casamia
“My housemates own this restaurant so things would be MEGA AWKS if I didn’t include it. JOKING! Bulrush is really, really great. If you haven’t been yet, rectify that immediately. Go hungry. Order the tasting menu. Leave wowed. You’ll be talking about it for weeks. Bloody good.” – Elly Curshen, The Pear Cafe
“Stunning, fresh, innovative food, presented beautifully in a modest venue. The staff make this place a joy to be in but also because they are all deeply passionate about what they do and the food you are eating, it also helps that they are extremely friendly. I know I am always in for a real treat when I come to Bulrush.” – Natalie Brereton, Food Blogger

“An oasis of fun that I just can’t get enough of. Their Turkish eggs on the brunch menu are among the best I’ve tasted, their tapas style lunch boasts some of the tastiest small plates in the city and their dinner menu has executive head chef Freddy Bird’s personality all over it. The menu is a delightful journey through Freddy’s imaginative seasonal passions which often ends in some of the best homemade ice cream in the country.” – Andy Clarke, TV Food Producer

“Friendly staff and a lovely sun soaked decking area, combined with amazing food make this one of my hands down favourite summer haunts.” – Dee Davies, Jinzu
“John Watson is one of the best chefs in Bristol for my money, the tasting menu is always exceptional and the things that man does with desserts shouldn’t be legal. We often eat elsewhere and then jump a taxi up to No Man’s for dessert as nowhere does it better. Book a table, order the soufflé and you too will never look at a dessert menu the same way again.” – Danny Walker, Psychopomp
“Kickass presentation, well thought-out ingredients, high level of chef skills, unfussy finer dining for the thinking diner.” – Dave Faulkner, Extract Coffee
Pasta Loco
37A Cotham Hill, BS6 6JY
Freshly-made pasta is at the heart of Pasta Loco’s streamlined menu which has swiftly become a favourite since opening in 2016. Follow your authentic Italian starters with faithful pasta mains featuring vegetables, seafood and meat. The bar is well-stocked with wines and spirits. Open Mon 6pm-10pm; Tues-Sat midday-2.30pm & 6pm-10pm.
“Who would have thought that a place serving pasta could do something so unbelievable? Dom is a bit of a genius with service; there is not anybody like him in the world. And the food. I had this pasta the other day, pappardelle with mussels and roasted sea bass, and a crab bisque with samphire, and I was blown away by it. If I could eat that every single day for the rest of my life, I would die a happy man. The best pasta dish I have ever eaten.” – Peter Sanchez-Iglesias, Casamia
“A true family run restaurant with a generosity that runs through every dish and the sort of service that makes you feel like a long lost friend. The lunch deal is the best value around.” – Laura Hart, Hart’s Bakery
“Yes, the name is awful and the logo is clipart. But good lord, I’ve never had Italian like it, much of the menu is hardly even recognisable as pasta. Pasta Loco create dishes which I can’t even fathom how they are made, and if this isn’t the best reason to visit somewhere to eat then I don’t know what is.” – Dan Pudsey, Durty Gurties
“The best Italian food I have ever had. The food was impeccable. The service was faultless and I had a thoroughly enjoyable evening.” – Rosie Morgan, Bristol Cheesemonger

“This restaurant is quite special. Firstly its location was the site of my food hero Keith Floyd’s first ever restaurant, there’s even a blue plaque outside to acknowledge the great man’s presence. Secondly, they know exactly what they’re doing in the kitchen and treat amazing seasonal ingredients with incredible skill.” – Josh Eggleton, The Pony & Trap
“Cracking little bistro. Solid cooking, lovely seasonal ingredients and a menu featuring British classics such as roast grouse. If this wasn’t enough of a recommendation, they do a superb full-English breakfast on the weekend (In my opinion, Bristol’s best). You’ll find me there every single Sunday, without fail. Say hello!” – Dan Vaux-Nobes, Bon Vivant
“There’s a beautifully crafted evening menu and the breakfast is great (the only place I’ve ever eaten where the black pudding is square – Who knew?). It’s a bit like eating in the front room of a small flat but it does mean you can join in the conversations of other diners.” – Andy Clarke, TV Food Producer
Wilks
1B Chandos Rd, BS6 6PG

Signature dishes include lobster bisque, cocoa meringue sphere and poached pears. Beef Wellington is on offer for Sunday lunches. Open Wed 6.30pm-9pm; Thurs-Sun midday-2pm & 6.30pm-9pm.
“What James is doing here, that refinement of how to cook food classically, but then he does it with such a light, modern touch. It’s that true Michel Bras touch to the food, which was a big part of James’ career. And with Christine front of house, it’s the perfect fine dining experience in Bristol. I’m biased about Casamia of course, but I’d also love to go to Wilks as well on a regular basis. I love everything about Wilks. And you can see that over the years, James has been pushing it and pushing it forward.” – Peter Sanchez-Iglesias, Casamia
“With a Michelin star you’d expect great food from Wilks and you won’t be disappointed. Especially as the prices have yet to reflect their star.” – Dee Davis, Jinzu
Wilsons

With a weekly changing menu harnessing seasonal ingredients plus a carefully-chosen wine list, typical menu items include hearty soups, game dishes, skate wings and pumpkin vodka. “Wilsons is just a perfect example of a proper English bistro. It’s simple and small – there is nothing flash about it, it’s just a really nice dining experience where you can sit and enjoy good food. The owner, Jan, has worked elsewhere and knows good food but the restaurant is relatively new, so you get a really great deal. He serves great quality food at great prices and you can get a three-course meal for £30. It’s also right near where I live so I might be biased but it is easily my favourite restaurant in Bristol.” – James Wilkins, Wilks
“Really pushing the food, great ambience and even more simple than Bulrush. Just the basics, wooden tables and whitewashed walls. I love that character and simplicity. It’s so clean and it’s all about the food and the execution of the food.” – Peter Sanchez-Iglesias, Casamia
“Just the best date night (or girls lunch…. or solo grown up lunch…. or any special occasion) place in Brizzle. Incredible food, always something really interesting on the menu. Fantastic wines and gorgeous pared-back surroundings.” – Forzia Ismail, Matatu Kitchen
