Explore the history of the Cricket World Cup at the SS Great Britain
The SS Great Britain will be celebrating the Cricket World Cup with a special exhibition, allowing the public to discover more about the ship’s key role in sporting history.
Cricket teams from across the world will be jet-setting to England and Wales for the Cricket World Cup this summer. But 150 years ago, they travelled very differently.
The temporary exhibition, which will display artefacts from famous cricketing legends, runs from May 25 to the July 21 and is included in the ticket price.

The ship is steeped in cricketing history, having transported players in both 1861 and 1863. Before any sporting world cup events were officially established, the All England cricket team travelled from England to Australia aboard the SS Great Britain, paving the way for the international sporting competitions recognised today.
The SS Great Britain’s exhibition is displaying a collection of cricket-related items, including E. M Grace’s diary from his 1863 voyage, his commemorative cricket ball trophy and details of cricket teams practice on board.

Visitors can also explore the very decks that those famous cricketers roamed for insights into what life on board may have been like.
The SS Great Britain Trust’s head of collections, Nick Booth, said: “We are delighted to invite members of the public to discover our unique cricketing history.
“The SS Great Britain’s dedicated Brunel Institute holds a large collection of cricket-related items and we are looking forward to sharing our story.”
