Uncover hidden history at Ashton Court Estate
In June and July 2019, Ashton Court invites aspiring historians and archaeologists to the estate for a community archaeological investigation.
All are welcome to take part in what will be a rare opportunity for the public to get their hands dirty at the South Lawn of the estate, with the chance to uncover more of Ashton Court’s hidden history.
In 2018, during the dry summer, marks appeared on the South Lawn at Ashton Court, hinting at a hidden history waiting to be uncovered.
is needed now More than ever
These marks were linked to an engraving from the 18th century, which detailed a no-longer-existent wing to Ashton Court Estate that was removed during alterations. As a result, it is assumed by many that the scorch marks on Ashton Court’s South Lawn may in fact be what remains of the forgotten wing and there is lots of talk about some unique garden features that are just waiting to be uncovered.
Local schools have been invited to take part in the investigation and the excavation is being conducted by Archeoscan with the permission of Bristol City Council and supported by Artspace Lifespace and Historic England.
The event takes place from June 23 to July 18 2019. Places are £30 per person, and can be booked by emailing archeoscan@hotmail.co.uk.
