The Second Combing opens in Stokes Croft
A hairdresser and former prisoner is seizing a second chance in life by opening his own barbershop in Stokes Croft.
Proudly showing off his newly-decorated premises in the corner of community enterprise Happytat, an animated Anthonell (Toni) Peccoo is full of excitement at the possibilities that lie ahead for his new social enterprise – something that is a dream come true for the 23-year-old.
Plants are placed throughout the vibrant space, where a comfortable swivel chair sits before a large mirror set within the statement pink and green wall. A distinctive logo on the outside window advertises the business – The Second Combing.
The name was partly inspired by Toni’s Christian beliefs and is a play on words that signifies his profession, as well as the second chance he has been given since his release from prison last year.

Toni says he has received a huge amount of support in his new venture
“I trained as a hairdresser, but it never had occurred to me that I could have my own shop,” says Toni, just days after his first successful day of trading.
“I saw the scope in Happytat – there’s already the bike shop in one corner, so I thought why not put a barbershop at the end.
“The support is really strong. My first client was a woman who came in on Saturday and I thought it was going to be just the one person, but then more people walking past called in.”
Toni got connected to MentorMe, a charity that provides mentoring support for ex-offenders, and through that, became a volunteer for the LoveBristol social enterprise, Happytat.
“Here I have been able to share my story and connect with people who have encouraged me to use my shine as the catalyst for a future where I can give back,” he says.
It was a love of art that first attracted Toni to hairdressing and he sees his work as an art form, but beyond that, he just wants to reach out to people who might otherwise feel isolated.
“I’d like for people to know and understand my story,” he continues. “I’m a simple man wanting to cut hair and reach out to people who have similar stories to tell and give everyone a voice, when they feel like that there isn’t anyone to listen.”
Toni has launched a fundraising campaign to help with startup costs and buying equipment. Support the social enterprise vi: www.gofundme.com/2ndcomb.
