Shotgun Barbers opens at the Bearpit

Shotgun Barbers in Clifton was started three years ago by John McMahon and his friend Sam Young. Following on from the success of this salon they have opened fresh new premises at the Bearpit, right in the centre of town. We caught up with owner John McMahon to find out more.
So tell us what makes Shotgun different?
“We both recognised that fast-moving times call for a new approach to the traditional service in the hairdressing and barbering industry. We feel that you no longer need to define cuts by sex. Following on from androgynous fashion, our unique, unisex barbershop reflects this. We charge one price for both sexes and this is based on both hair length and what services you choose. From fades to fringes, balyage to beards, our team specialise in the latest fashions, colour work and new trends.
So clearly barbers aren’t just for men?
Not anymore! We love the idea of women being able to get their hair cut when they want and not having to book or pay double the price. You can simply walk in off the street, take a seat and enjoy a barista coffee (from Bristol’s own Extract Coffee), read a good magazine and listen to the vinyl that is playing whilst you wait for one of our highly trained stylists to come available. That said, you can book in advance for colour work as this obviously takes more time.
Tell me more about your staff.
All of our staff are passionate about cutting and colouring hair. They are a mix of barbers and hairdressers from different backgrounds, ranging from those that have trained with Toni & Guy to Guardian fashion shoot stylists.
What products are you stocking?
We are passionate about our products and use the Baxter of California range. This is a men’s grooming range that we use in the Clifton salon and has been well received by our clients. For women we use the L:A Bruket range which is carefully composed of natural and organic ingredients as well as the label.m range – the official hair care product of London Fashion Week.
