SS Great Britain exhibition wins prize

By Josie Scott-Taylor  Wednesday Jul 10, 2019

Outstanding museum exhibitions worldwide have been recognised by the BSHS Great Exhibitions Prize 2019, and the SS Great Britain’s recent exhibition, Being Brunel, has been awarded.

Dr Elizabeth Haines, chair of judges at BSHS, said: “We had an amazing international set of entries for this year’s prize from national, regional and local museums as well as from collections held by universities and scientific societies.

“We felt that the winning exhibitions stood out from the crowd because of their success in engaging audiences with unusual and challenging aspects of the history of science and technology.”

The Being Brunel exhibition provides an engaging and personal exploration into Brunel’s life and work, told through his own story and those of his family and colleagues.

The digital, hands-on exhibition hopes to inspire new interest in the history of engineering.

Established in 2012, the Great Exhibitions prize is awarded biannually to recognise excellence in public exhibitions which address the history of science, technology or medicine. Alongside the SS Great Britain, The Royal College of Physicians of London and The Norwegian Museum of Science and Technology have also been commended for their exceptional exhibitions.

Elizabeth added: “As a Society, the BSHS believes the histories of science and technology are a vital tool for understanding our lives today.”
