Starter for 10: Natalie Holmes

By Bristol24/7  Friday Mar 9, 2018

Bristol singer-songwriter Natalie Holmes began her career by uploading songs to YouTube, where her videos have now received more than one million views. “The inventive but familiar, simple but complex. She writes the kind of tunes that get inside your head and don’t let go,” according to BBC Introducing in the West, with Natalie’s music also likened to Joni Mitchell and Tori Amos.

Catch her performing on Saturday, March 24 at Milk Teeth on Portland Square, with support from Katie Sky. Tickets to the St Paul’s cafe’s first ever gig cost £7, which includes a free drink for the next time you visit.

Natalie is this month’s Starter for 10:

Wine or Beer?
“Both. A bottle of wine with friends at home is the best, but I have to satisfy my dancing cravings occasionally! Ideally I’d love there to be more dancing opportunities that didn’t involve clubbing.”

Clifton or St Paul’s?
“St Paul’s, Stokes Croft and Gloucester Road. So much community feel, creativity and vibrancy!”

Car or Bike?
“Although I require a car to shift my gear around for gigs, I cycle at every opportunity.”

Beer or Cider?
Beer

Coffee or Tea?
“Coffee – I stopped drinking breakfast tea the day I started liking coffee, but I still hydrate myself with plenty of herbals for my voice.”

Art gallery or street art?
Street art

Book or iPhone?
“Both. I’ve been really into the past three books I’ve read, so I’m currently verging on that side. But I do also love the expanding scope of what’s possible with phones and often find myself doing social media work stuff after picking up my book and intending to read.”

Electric or acoustic?
“I do own a Gretsch electric now but I feel a little out of my depth with it, as I’m no good at lead guitar lines! I enjoy exploring the differences between any instruments really.”

Summer or winter?
Summer

City or Rovers?
“Neither. I’ve never been into sport. In fact the only live game I have ever watched was ice hockey. I’m the worst viewer of anything competitive, I just like supporting everybody!”
