Starter for 10: Nura Aabe
Nura Aabe is a campaigner for the rights of people with autism. After the diagnosis of her son’s autism, Nura struggled to be accepted in her community. There is no word for autism in the Somali language, and there is nothing between ‘normal’ and ‘not normal’ in Somali culture.
Nura founded Autism Independence, a Bristol-based organisation which works with families and local authorities to help transform the lives of children with autism. On October 2, Nura is speaking at 5×15 Bristol at the Tobacco Factory Theatre and on November 2 she will be speaking at TEDx Bristol at Colston Hall.
