From almost 50 applications, five community reporters joined Bristol24/7 at the end of June 2020 for an innovative pilot project. They were hired to report hyper-local news from their home turf for two months, uncovering stories that mainstream media outlets might otherwise miss.
As well as their talent for journalism, the reporters were all chosen because they are strongly embedded in areas of Bristol that are generally underreported on.
Each week, stories have been published on the Bristol24/7 website, expanding our coverage in areas the publication wasn’t previously reaching. Reporters have broken stories that have then been picked up by the BBC, had their work shared widely within their communities, and fought back against negative or poorly-researched news coverage about their areas.
More recently we have recruited reporters to represent not just diverse areas of Bristol, but also communities that face disadvantages in the city. We have had reporters who have translated content into Somali and Polish languages, and have supported a podcast producer who has created an oral history series on 12 areas of Bristol.
