Video: Base jumping into the Bearpit
Some people do everything they can to avoid the Beapit. On Friday night, four daredevils did exactly the opposite and parachuted into the middle of St James Barton roundabout from the overlooking Premier Inn:
Arthur Buxton was cycling by the Bearpit soon after 9pm. He takes up the story: “I heard a loud cracking noise which made me look up – and to my surprise someone was parachuting into the Bearpit so I went down to have a look.

“Three more guys followed, leaping from the Premier Inn and all gliding down to land safely in the Bearpit, one wishing bystanders a polite ‘good evening’ on landing. Thy all immediately packed up their parachutes and made a run for it.”
What the daredevils were doing is called base jumping, a form of extreme parachuting from a fixed structure or cliff. ‘Base’ is an acronym for the categories of objects one can jump from: building, antenna, span and Earth.
