Candidates were called into a room to hear the results before they were led to the stage and the full numbers were read out by returning officer Nicola Yates. Rees has come out way ahead with 56,729 votes. Ferguson trails in second with 32,375. Tory candidate Lucas has comfortably beaten Dyer from the Greens, with 19,617 to exactly 10,000. Mayor Festus Kudehinbu, a Nigeria-born taxi driver from St Paul’s standing as an independent, has come last.

Parties are forming into groups around the stage where the declaration of first preference votes is about to be made.
If one candidate has more than 50 per cent, they are the new mayor of Bristol. If not, the top two enter a run-off, with second preference votes counted.

George Ferguson has just arrived at the count. He seems to have accepted that he hasn’t won but he’s shaking the hands of officials and has told reporters that Marvin is a “good guy”.
