£1m could be spent to refurbish traffic lights at busy junction
The refurbishment of the traffic lights at a busy junction in the city centre would make sure they are safe and reliable for the next 20 years, according to Bristol City Council.
On Thursday, councillors will decide whether to accept £1m of government funding to replace the lights where Canons Road meets College Green.
The plans are part of the same “transformative project” revealed in January that could see Park Street closed to through-traffic and a bus gate installed at the top of the road by the end of 2025, with construction work on the lights likely to start ahead of this work.
is needed now More than ever
Ed Plowden, chair of the transport & connectivity committee, said: “While our plans to refurbish the College Green and Canons Road signals are included in this wider project, we have decided to replace them urgently due to the equipment needing an upgrade.
“If the proposal to accept the funding is approved by the committee, we can get on with the work to replace the signals.
“Bringing forward this work ensures both essential maintenance and strategic enhancements are completed efficiently, benefiting the community and the environment.
“This will help to make sure they are in working order while also delivering walking and cycling improvements, including better facilities for visually impaired pedestrians and improved cycling links between Park Street and the city centre.”
