435 new flats could be built on former car showrooms

By Hannah Massoudi  Tuesday Sep 10, 2024

The view of Bristol for passengers arriving at Temple Meads could be forever changed if a major new housing development is granted planning permission.

Bristol City Council officers are backing a proposal that would see 435 new homes built on the site of the former Peugeot dealership and Victoria House.

Developers Dandara Living are proposing a mixture of one-, two- and three-bedroom flats to rent.

The proposal would see two buildings set either side of Chatterton Street.

New public realm is proposed within and around the site including a children’s play area, seating areas and extensive planting; with this new public space and a new pedestrian through-route open to everyone.

Developers also promise a segregated three-metre-wide cycle lane and a three-and-a-half metre pavement.

The planning application includes 43 affordable homes at the lowest cost Local Housing Allowance rents that will be made available to residents on Bristol City Council’s housing waiting list.

Dandara initially submitted an application in December 2022 but amended the proposals following requests from the council, one of which was to reduce the height of a proposed tower from 20 storeys to 15.

Jacqui Pollard from architects Stride Treglown said that the site “deserves something really special”.

She said: “As well as safe, green and welcoming public realm wrapping around and within the development, we have carefully refined the design to provide a striking, visual welcome to people leaving Temple Meads, that also reflects Bristol’s history in shapes and materials.”

A Dandara spokesperson said: “It’s been a challenging process, but the result is an outstanding scheme that will transform this underused, brownfield site into a vibrant, attractive, safe, green and inclusive place where new and existing residents feel safe and welcome.”

If permission is granted on September 18, construction is likely to begin in 2025 with the development being completed and opened by late-2027 or early-2028.
