A marriage proposal in graffiti

By Martin Booth  Saturday Mar 12, 2016

Primary school teacher Anna thought that her boyfriend Jago was just taking her for a stroll around Bristol on Saturday afternoon.

But after having a pint in the Spotted Cow they walked by North Street Green where graffiti artist Keith Hopewell, aka SPZero76, was putting the finishing touches to a piece especially for her.

“She looked back at me a little confused,” Jago told Bristol24/7. “Then she stood there a bit stunned. ‘That’s my name,’ she said. Then she saw the ring and luckily she said yes.”

Jago had been planning the proposal with his friend SPZero76 for six months and the pair had recruited Stephen Hayles from Upfest to find a suitable wall for the marriage proposal.

He had mapped out a route for their walk and was in secret telephone contact with SPZero76 – who had previously painted the kitchen of their home in Reading – to perfectly time their casual meander through Bedminster.

“I thought it was a good way to propose,” Jago said. “And Bristol was a great place to do it.”
