Acta – where everyone’s stories matter
A small, Bedminster-based community theatre organisation is working to support and give a voice to some of Bristol’s most marginalised and vulnerable people.
Acta aims to use theatre as a tool to create positive change, raise aspirations, increase confidence, develop self-worth and employability, re-engage and connect communities. It is one of the 45 causes that stand to benefit from Bristol Giving Day on Wednesday, October 9.
“I was depressed and I knew I needed to change my life,” says Tom, 22, reflecting on his journey before joining acta.
is needed now More than ever
“I had tried to kill myself and I knew I needed to find something to motivate myself. I was in a vulnerable environment at home and I needed ways to engage with others and surround myself with different people, away from my family.
“I had done drama before, but at acta it was different. The one session a week made it easier and less stressful than everyday rehearsals. We were able to create our own show and our characters so by the time we performed I was filled with overwhelming confidence. After finishing the show, I felt euphoric. I had never felt like that before.”

Bristol Giving Day is organised by the Quartet Community Foundation and is being supported by Bristol24/7.
People can show their support by undertaking the Bridges Challenge and donating £1 for each of the city’s 45 bridges crossed. The target is to raise £45,000 for the 45 organisations and charities.
Find out more about acta by heading to the Banana Bridge, between Clarence Road and York Road on October 9.
