Agents of Change: representation in Bristol’s creative sector
A new series of events that will shine a light on emerging talent, showcase unheard voices and focus on representation in the creative sector launches this month.
Stacey Olika, a graphic designer, photographer and filmmaker, is the brains behind the project and has partnered with UWE Bristol’s Equity programme for the debut, Agents of Change: Think, Create, Play which takes place at Arnolfini on Saturday, May 18.
“This event is going to bring creatives from a range of disciplines together,” says Stacey.
“Within Bristol, there are a lot of BAME (black, Asian and minority ethnic) creatives and young BAME people who would like to go into this industry but are at a loss because they don’t see people like them, come in as speak on these matter.
“I want to see people that look like me doing what I’m doing.
“I am surrounded by such creativity in Bristol and outside and I wanted to create something I wish I had been able to attend. Connecting innovators and emerging creatives across disciplines to connect and collaborate.
“It’s about shining a light on new voices and underrepresented voices and partnering with UWE Bristol Equity is incredibly fitting because we have the same goal – to give a platform to BAME people.”

The day aims to spark inspiration, debate and share best practice among people across the different creative industries.
It will feature a keynote speech from Jide Adetunji, co-founder of GUAP MAG, the UK’s first video magazine, that allows audiences to watch content rather than read it. Its aim is to inspire and entertain young people, and open their eyes to the opportunities that exist within society.
There will be a panel discussion on ‘curating your brand and creative practice’.
Panellists Abbi Bayliss, an artist, illustrator and writer, Adibah Iqbal, a writer, comedian and DJ, and Parys Gardener, a digital illustrator, will discuss their own creative journeys, developing their brands and creating opportunities.
An introduction by mayor Marvin Rees will be shown to attendees, who will also have chance to network and meet artist exhibitors.
